The term relevé meaning ‘to rise’ is a step used frequently throughout the bbodance grades. The step can be performed in first, second, third, fourth and fifth position and always starts with a plié. From the depth of the plié you would quickly snap up into a rise bringing the feet right underneath the body. This step can also be performed with a retiré (where the working leg is bent and brought underneath the knee of the supporting leg (see diagram.)) This is the same action which is needed for a pirouette en déhor (outwards). If following a different school of ballet (i.e. the French school) it would not spring bringing the feet underneath the body, instead it would stay in the same position with a smooth rise rather than snapping into position.
At Balletic we follow the bbodance ballet syllabus which in turn uses the ‘Gail Grant Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet’ for all of it’s terminology. The diagrams may be different to what you are used to based on the school of ballet that you follow.
